Why Does Doctor Doom Look Like Tony Stark?

Spoilers ahead for the Avengers: Endgame Encore footage and Avengers: Doomsday promotional material.
Avengers: Endgame came out in April 2019 with no post-credits scene. After the credits, you heard metal being hammered. Disney confirmed to Vanity Fair at the time that it was the sound of Tony Stark building his first armor in that cave, and Joe Russo described it as the filmmakers saying goodbye to Tony.
Seven years later, the Endgame Encore release put new footage to that sound. According to The Direct’s description of the screening in September 2026, the hammering now plays over Doctor Doom forging his mask.
Robert Downey Jr. plays Doom. That’s the real-world answer to why Doom has Tony’s face, and it’s the least interesting one. The question fans keep asking is what it means inside the story, and Marvel has spent more than two years not answering it.
Why Marvel cast Downey, whether Victor looks like Tony inside the story, whether anybody in the MCU notices, whether there’s an in-universe reason, and whether Victor is secretly some version of Tony are five different questions. The record answers some of them and stays quiet on the rest.
What Marvel has actually said
On July 27, 2024, at Marvel Studios’ San Diego Comic-Con panel, Downey pulled a Doom mask off on stage. Joe Russo introduced him as Victor von Doom and pointed to the possibilities of the multiverse. Downey’s line was “New mask, same task.” Nothing in the announcement explained the face.
In August 2024, on The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, Downey described how Kevin Feige brought it to him. Feige’s pitch, as Downey told it, was “Let’s get Victor Von Doom right.” That backs up Victor von Doom as the character’s identity without ruling a multiversal connection in or out.
Marvel’s promotional material for Doomsday ties this Doom to Earth-828, the Fantastic Four’s home reality, and to his history with the team.
In March 2025, The Times asked the Russo brothers how Downey could come back as Doom after Tony died. Anthony Russo’s answer, as reported: “We can’t explain that as it’s part of the story.” He added that nobody else could play the character the same way.
In July 2026, a Soundsphere interviewer asked about a moment where viewers understand why Doom looks like Tony without being Tony. Joe Russo said he wasn’t giving anything away, and that “It will all make sense when you watch the movies.” Anthony described Doom as a new character audiences couldn’t guess ahead of time.
Downey talked to Entertainment Weekly on July 26, 2026. He put the overlap in intelligence and science, and said trauma turned Tony into a hero and pushed Doom the opposite way. That’s the clearest statement anybody involved has made about how the two relate, and it’s a thematic answer that says nothing about why they share a face inside the story.

How a non-answer turned into a confirmation
Anthony Russo’s Times answer said the explanation is part of the story and declined to give it. ComicBook.com reproduced that answer in March 2025 and framed it as the directors confirming Iron Man’s death is part of Doom’s story, which is an addition the published quote doesn’t support.
The Soundsphere exchange works the same way. The premises in that question, that Doom looks like Tony, that he isn’t Tony, and that a scene explains it, came from the interviewer. Joe Russo didn’t lay any of that out. He declined and promised it would make sense. He also said the movies, plural, so there’s no guarantee Doomsday settles it alone.
In late August 2026, ComicBook.com reported an Empire interview in which Joe Russo said there were “zero similarities” between Doom and Iron Man. From the context available, he was talking about Downey’s performances, meaning Doom isn’t Downey playing an evil Tony. Without the full Empire passage, reading it as a blanket denial of any story connection goes further than the reporting supports.
Then there’s David Harbour. Asked by Variety in August 2026 for a Doomsday line without context, he pointed and said in Red Guardian’s accent, “You… are Tony Stark.” None of the reporting says whether that’s a real line, who it’s aimed at, whether the speaker is right, or whether it survives the edit, and a character calling somebody Tony Stark would not make it so.
Two comics that keep getting mixed up
What If? Iron Man: Demon in an Armor #1, published in December 2010, is the one with an actual identity swap. Marvel’s own reading guide describes Tony Stark and Victor von Doom swapping minds, with Doom taking over Tony’s life and Tony stuck in Doom’s body and circumstances. In that story, the man with Tony’s face is Victor in his head.
Infamous Iron Man is a different animal. After Secret Wars and Civil War II, Victor von Doom tries to reform and takes up the Iron Man name while Tony is out of the picture, and Marvel’s 2017 coverage described him trying to fill in for Tony. Victor becomes an Iron Man. Nobody swaps bodies, and Tony never becomes Doom.
No verified source says Doomsday is adapting either one, though Demon in an Armor at least gives the swap theories a real precedent.
The theories, held up against the record
The multiverse counterpart theory says that in another reality, the man who became Tony Stark here became Victor von Doom instead. The Multiverse Saga, Russo invoking the multiverse at Comic-Con, and Downey’s line about trauma sending two brilliant men in opposite directions all point that way. What it has to explain is why Marvel keeps calling him Victor von Doom, and why this Victor would line up with Tony instead of simply being his own universe’s Victor. Some versions add that Howard and Maria Stark had another son who got raised in Latveria, a detail with no evidence behind it.
The swap theory says Victor is himself but wearing Tony, some version of Demon in an Armor. It would let Marvel say Downey plays Victor and still give Victor Tony’s face. A related take has Doom possessing Tony or dreamwalking into his body, since Doom has always been science and sorcery and the MCU has already shown dreamwalking. Those are separate mechanisms and each would need its own evidence, and so far no source places Tony’s body anywhere near Doom.
The thematic theory says Victor is his own man and Marvel cast Downey because Tony and Doom are two answers to the same kind of brilliance, ego and trauma. The comparison itself is the best-supported piece of any of these theories: the Victor von Doom name, Downey’s trauma comparison, the Russos calling Doom a new character, and now the Encore hammer. The MCU has already put one actor on unrelated characters, with Chris Evans as both Steve Rogers and Johnny Storm. What that support can’t reach is whether the shared face is purely a casting choice or has a reason inside the story, and whether anybody in the MCU sees Tony when they look at Doom. No public footage has shown that scene.
The Tony-survived theory says the Tony who died in Endgame lived, came back, or got turned into Doom. Endgame treats that death as real, and Marvel announced Downey as Victor. For this one to work, the movie would have to explain how Tony survived, why he’s using Victor’s name, how he picked up Victor’s history with the Fantastic Four and his tie to Earth-828, and why the directors call him a new character. No verified source supplies any of those steps. A Tony variant who survived in some other timeline is a separate theory from the original Tony surviving.
The mistaken-identity theory says Victor is completely separate and the Avengers just think he’s Tony because of his face. Harbour’s line fits that if it’s real and aimed at Doom. It would explain why casting Downey matters without making Victor a variant, and it would still leave open why the two men look alike in the first place.
The last one is that Downey plays two roles, Doom and a separate Tony variant. It sticks around because Secret Wars is exactly the kind of story where that happens, and Harbour’s line could be pointed at an actual Tony. No official source has confirmed a second Downey role, and even if one exists, it wouldn’t explain why Victor’s face matches.
What's confirmed and what isn't
When we covered D23, we said Doom’s Earth-828 origin means he isn’t simply the main-timeline Tony, and the promotional material still backs that narrow point. On the record, Downey plays Victor von Doom and Marvel is deliberately setting his mask next to Tony’s first armor. Earth-828 doesn’t settle the rest, because a character from that reality could still have some relationship to somebody from the main one.
Nothing on the record confirms that Doom is Tony, a Tony variant, or Victor inside Tony’s body, that the Avengers recognize him, that he caused Tony’s death, or that Downey has a second role. And the 2019 hammering was Tony building his first suit according to Disney at the time, so the record doesn’t support reading it as a secret Doom tease planted back then.
